Kid-Friendly Bookcase Hack
Materials: Expedit bookcase, Spontan Magnet Board, Vippa Hooks, plywood, fabric, chalkboard paint
Description: I wanted to use the Expedit bookcase / desk combo for my craft area, but I wanted to close off the back of the bookcase somehow so I could use it as a room divider as well. Through several conversations with my better half, we decided to turn it into an activity area for our daughter.
First, we backed the bookcase with plywood I wrapped in fabric. The fabric now served as the background on my side of the bookcase.
Next we measured and planned out all of the components we wanted for the activity area. We incorporated two magnet boards, a flannel board, and a chalkboard, as well as moulding to trim it all out.
Next we used a combination of screws and glue to attach all of the components. We finished off the sides with some shoe moulding to cover the seams.
Last, we attached some hooks to the side of the bookcase for hanging craft shirts, etc.
We LOVE how it turned out and my 2 1/2 year old uses it daily. What would we do without IKEA?
See more of the kid's activity area.
