Expedit Cash Wrap

Materials: Expedit 4x2, door inserts, casters, wallpaper

Description: While in the process of opening a retail shop on a very small budget I spent months searching for a cash wrap counter with clean modern lines and portability so that I could easily move it around to suit redecorating, only to find that what I was looking for was well out of my target price range.

The perfect solution actually turned out to be the Expedit 4x2 unit in gloss white, turned on its side with locking casters. I wallpapered the back of the shelf inserts, and while I love the look now I also love that it can be easily changed; and I drilled a small hole for the cash register wires. The top of this unit is the perfect size for a standard cash register, and the doors provide plenty of supply and file storage.

Hopefully this helps an entrepreneur on a budget ;)

LACKed a 3 tier display

Materials: 5 Lack side tables, 2 sets Capita legs, 1 Ekby Jarpen shelf

Description: Working for a small business means we don't have a lot of money to spend on fixtures, especially since most fixtures for retail are way over-priced. We needed a 3-tier display and in retail fixture catalogs nothing was less than $300. We've been using Ikea as a less-expensive alternative for our fixtures and having become a fan of Ikea Hackers I decided to see if I could create something myself.

I purchased 5 LACK Side tables ($9.99 ea) in black-brown. I put together 4 of them as normal for the base. The fifth one I added the Capita Legs in the 8in size ($14 for 4). I just drilled them into the bottom of the LACK table in place of the regular legs. For the top tier I used an EKBY JARPEN ($14.99) shelf that had been cut down to about 1ft square. Add some paint to the unfinished sides of the EKBY JARPEN shelf, then attach the second set of Capita legs to this.

What makes it great for business is that it's really versatile and allows for quick changes. All told I only ended up spending $92.94 and got a great looking display out of it.

Faktum floating Office Cabinet Radiator Cover

Materials: Faktum Abstrakt wall cabinets (37x80x92cm)

Description: We spent all our money on the mega-sized design office table. So there was hardly any money left for the storage cabinet.

The decision was easy: white Abstrakt kitchen wall cabinets, as they are perfect for folders. Just the right depth and height. But I also wanted to get the ugly radiator out of sight.

To get this done, we built a large strong pinewood framework in front of and around the radiator, firmly anchored in the wall. We built the framework so that the radiator heat would not get obstructed by the frame. Every 80cm we made vertical pinewood beams on which we mounted the 4 2-door cabinets and a 1-door cabinet.

To finish off, a 28mm think fingerjointed wooden plate covered all sides of the new formed cabinet. It's painted in a greygreenish Christmas tree color, matching the trees outside.

For the radiator to deliver its heat, the top panel has a milled in metal ventilation grid.

The whole piece of furniture is floating 15cm above the floor to make it more spacious.
